12.29.2023 More Malagasy Photographs - A Visit to Nosy Ve from Tulear

It has taken a while but I have gone through my pictures and completed the edits!

Of course, I found more bird photographs, so I am including them too.

Here is a handsome red foddy. I was lucky enough to be able to stand on outside steps to be high enough to photograph him!

And here is the red foddy nest.

She is a brush warbler. She graciously posed in a tree right next to me!

One aspect of the trip that should be shared is early morning trip to Nosy Ve, a beautiful little island off the western coast that is the nesting area of the red-tailed tropic bird. We left the hotel before dawn - there is not much sleep on a birding trip. We had to drive a short distance to the cost to board our boat to Nosy Ve. What a surprise. There is no dock, The boat is open with 2 motos and yes, we had life jackets! In order to get to the boat at high tide, we rode in zebu drawn carts! First time for everything.

Here are a few photographs of the zebus, carts and people being transported to the boat. As you can see, dawn is just breaking along the horizon.

Returning back to the shore after discharging the first group of passengers onto the motorboat.

A few necessary supplies for the trip - like fuel!

And here we are in the boat and wearing our life jackets. Did you notice it is an open boat! No protection from the sun or rain, which we did encounter on the way back.

An outrigger on the high seas, probably got an earlier start than we did.

Island scenes.

Greeted by a great blue heron.

Outrigger transporting vendors. No tourist attraction is devoid of vendors!

Women selling seashells (yes, I bought two - bargained hard for them) and cloth that you can use a a blanket or as a beach wrap.

A fellow birder purchased the item.  We need to help the local commertce!

A few children from the outrigger looking at us. The girls were given food and pens. Wish I had more pens, but I gave them all that was in my backpack.  Lesson learned. Keep school supplies handy. Shold have known that but did not anticipate and encounter.

Vendors returning to the outrigger.

And here is our tropic bird. We saw one on her nest, one immature under a bush and a few flying.  Well worth the boating excitement!

This is our motorboat. You can see storm clouds in the distance. During lunch we watched lightning in the distance. The trip was rough going back but there were no problems except it did rain! Held on tight as we bounced up and down pretty dramatically!

We also had to pay landing fees once we were on our way back to the main island. The exchange is being made while we are motoring and the collectors are sailing!

After the journey, we were met by a tractor transport as it was low tide! No more rides in the zebu drawn carts for us. We stepped as gracefully as possible between the two.

The carts were used to pick up the captain and crew.

Very low tide.

Zebus on the shore.

It was a great day. We had lunch at a beach resort in San Augustin before coming back to Tulear. Saw some new bird on the island as well as at San Augustin, had a great lunch and a great experience.

Will post more pictures as time allows.

Until next time...................

Merry Christmas to you and your family. May you enjoy the blessings of this very special and holy season.

Yes, even Santa came to Mass on Christmas Eve. He needed an early Mass so he could deliver all of the presents to the good boys and girls!

From my family to yours,

Merry Christmas.

12.14.2023 Lemur videos

Enjoy a few videos of the Sifaka and Ring-tailed lemurs. Watch how they jump in the trees and across the road. And take a look at their tails and hands and feet. And there are a couple of a mother and baby. They were remarkable and the highlight of the trip.

Sifika lemur.

Hope you enjoyed these clips!

12.08.2023 Madagascar Lemurs

Observing the lemurs was the highlight of my visit to Madagascar. I could have watched them the entire trip. They are incredibly agile with huge eyes adapted for nighttime vision. We were able to observe several species and it was worth every hike up a steep rainforest trail to see them.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

He is a Sifika lemur. We saw quite a few of them in a very advantageous location - they were crossing a trail where we were walking! A nice clear view allowed us all to watch them climb and "run" across the trail.

They were very curious but did keep their distance. Smart.

Look at that long tail.

Jumping across the trees. Look at those fingers on the hands.

Buddies in a tree.

The shape of the foot and thick pad allow them to secure jumps and climbs on the trees. Remarkable,

We saw quite a few Moms and their little ones.  The babies just hang on and go for a ride!

As you most likely figured out, I have many pictures of the Sifaka, but not as many as I have of the ringtailed lemurs - up next!

Crossing the road - sideway movement.

Ringtailed lemur - Mom and babe. She was very curious and obviously familiar with people. She was on the lanai visiting me!

See the tail of the baby?

Stopping for a refreshment - Mom's milk.

Big beautiful eyes.

Waiting for breakfast - ours!

.

Indri lemurs - endangered and a bit more secretive hiding in the forest. There is the Mother and the babe in this picture.

A nice backside photo - she just wasn't interested in a photo! It was dinner time and she obviously was hungry!

Red and brown lemur.

Here is a bamboo lemur appropriately named for his diet and habitat! He is so cute!

Wonder if he is also cleaning his teeth while eating! Natures toothbrush.

Mouse lemur at night.

Brown lemurs.

Sportiva lemur in the spiny forest.

Cute little lemur and easy to miss!

We did some night time hikes and were able to see a few mouse lemurs and sportivas.

This was a great trip and I so do appreciate the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures! Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Until next time...........
