08.07.2022. Summer, Gardens, Sailing, my boys, and the locals

What we really could use now is a nice, long and steady rain. Not only is it hot and humid, but the earth is parched, and the gardens are dry and some of the well established plants are struggling. Fortunately I did not plant many new shrubs or flowers. We had a sprinkle of rain yesterday, not even enough to call the dogs inside the house.

We are seeing the last of the daylily blooms. This one is delicately colored but quite large.

The last tiger lily bloom.

Stella d'ora reblooms.

The star gazer lilies survived the bunnies!

We have quite a few little grasshoppers that seem to like the daylilies.

We have a resident Mr. Toad to add to our menagerie of animals around the house. He stays on the kitchen porch, quite often just under the kitchen door step. He also sleeps in the flower pot that contains a large rosemary plant. On occasion he has been "watered" before I notice him half buried in the soil! He doesn't really seem to mind. But I have to teach the boys "no touch" as they are very curious about him. Fionnegan in particular keeps a close eye on him. While Gunnarr and Shorty will ignore Mr Toad after a minute or two, Fionn will recline on the porch and just watch him.

And I have mentioned the bunnies. They are voracious eaters and have enjoyed all of my black eyed Susan's and daisies. Last night we watched one on the other side of the fence nibbling away at the leaves on a low branch of an azalea. The dogs were all excited and barked but settled down on command. Leave the bunny alone, I tell them repeatedly. Leave the bunny alone. So Fionn and Gunnarr just sat in the driveway laser focused on him as he happily nibbled  his dinner.

We have planted flowers to attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. We do have all three is the gardens and it is especially enjoyable to watch the hummingbirds. No good pictures yet, but here are some of the bees and black swallowtail butterfly. Maybe the butterfly is just as happy on the grass!

Happy bees.

The boys are staying cool with ice cream and watermelon treats.

Nice, cold watermelon hits the spot.

We have one new visitor to our yard. There is a barn owl that has been here at night and in the very early morning hours. One night it was calling and woke me up. I had never heard of such a call and thought it was the snoring of one of  the boys. An online search brought me right to the bird. One night it perched on a tree along the driveway. So I was able to get a good look at it and watch it fly from one tree to another. Fortunately it did not bother Fionn or Gunnarr as they were just outside for their late night excursions.

And yes, my girl Mimi has stretched her sails and had some nice adventures in Boston Harbor. Here she is on her morning. It is also enjoyable to just sit on the deck and watch the sun set. I now have an electric motor for her. It does make it easier to get to the mooring.

We also have early morning walks when we can. I was trying to get Gunnarr to look at the camera, promises of treats and kisses didn't work. So I asked them if they wanted to go for a walk. That got their attention, so we did. After the photography session, of course!

. So off we went, walking in the cool of the forest.  They love the walks. And it is refreshing. And they love the cool of the car air conditioning when we are done!

How have you all been? Are you surviving the heat? What do you do to stay cool?

Stay cool.

Until next time........................

03.14.2021 Spring teases

March 2021 came in like a lion. We could hear the wind blowing hard and heard quite a few snaps and crashes as tree branches fell around the yard. Fortunately  there was no damage to the house or car! A little time doing some yard clean up and hauling branches over the hill to the brush pile and the yard is mostly clean again - still has packed snow and ice in many places but you can see the brown grass and flower beds that will need cleaned soon. Spring is coming soon!

Then it was warm - really warm. The 6 foot snow banks that the dogs love to climb to play "king of the mountain" are quickly melting. We even had lunch outside on the deck on the sunny side of the house. It felt so good to be warm outdoors. Everyone has Spring fever. The dogs are running around chasing each other, squirrels, birds and any little mouse that dares pop it's head up through the underground or snow bank burrows. And now it is cold again. Welcome Spring!

It won't be long before we are in our Spring routine. I have already been dong some garden preparations by removing some dead plant leaves that I left so the ground would not be muddy for little paws when it rained. Am removing only a little at a time until the gardens can be mulched to try to keep those paws as dry as possible. The dogs are also helping me with the Spring garden preparations by digging more holes for  me. Dirty faces, dirty paws, happily wagging tails! What could possibly be so interesting in the ground for them? They saw me coming and I called  No digging and they starting furiously digging as they must know their time is limited for this apparently most pleasant and intriguing activity for them. Really dirty faces!

There is always something interesting happening outside the gate. They watch for birds, squirrels, chipmunks and any family member of our neighbors to come outside. They also listen and then call out to Tukka and Oliver our neighbor dogs. There are times when all of the dogs are howling at each other! That is when it is time to come back inside the house. There are other neighbors that may not appreciate canine communications!

Signs of Spring. The daffodils and hyacinths have broken ground! These are close to the house where is it warm. Won't be long now for more flowers to poke through the earth.

We are all enjoying a little warmth and sunshine after lunch.

Gunnarr. He has become very attached over this past year of the pandemic. He likes having me home more often and really becomes quite upset when I must go to the office. He is a precious companion, loves to sit right at my side and looks at me with loving eyes. he tilts his heads and listens to my every word. Sometimes I just tell stories as he listens intently. No one has ever listened to me like that! He has had a few challenges this year - one trip to the vet for a torn dew claw that really bled and this month he sprained a knee running in the yard. But he recovered well and is back to normal chasing Fionnegan. He is such a pleasure.

Fionnegan. Loving, ornery, athletic, and how he loves to cuddle and sleep on my lap. He has a special place on a desk near my computer to keep me company while I work from home. He sometimes will look at the computer screen and looks very mystified when I show him pictures of himself and Gunnarr and Shorty. And he was really stunned to see the video of them all playing in the yard. I wonder how these little brains handle this technology! He has such energy - he rarely just walks - but runs in the house and outside with such enthusiasm. He is a joy.

Shorty. My Yapese dog and excellent companion. He too is ornery, clever and very smart. He is very inquisitive and watches me like a hawk whenever I am cooking, cleaning and doing household and outdoor chores. He also is the guard dog of the house and barks loudly to alarm me of someone at the door of my house, the mailman at the mailbox and the neighbors in their yard.

He has adjusted so well to a more structured life than the life we had in Yap. And he loves his forest walks in the mornings when the weather is nice. But I must always keep an eye on him. One day he slipped through the outside gate while I was shoveling snow. He wanted to visit the neighbors! He walked along the road and my concern is that he never has shown any fear of cars.  Fortunately wondered into their driveway and up their sidewalk. And most fortunate for both if us, he let me readily connect his leash to his collar and walked very calmly home with me. A short lived adventure, no doubt. Since then he is still very good by the gate and doesn't rush it when I am passing in and out of the yard. He knows better. And so do I. I must be very careful so this does not happen again. He is a love.

Looks like it is nap time and time for me to do a few more chores.

May you all stay safe during this pandemic. Let's pray the worst is behind us.

02/09/2020 February

As I was outside yesterday with the boys I couldn't help but notice how nice it was. Yes, it was cold and windy. Really cold. But the sun was reflecting on the snow and the sky was clear and blue and you can just feel Spring in the air. I really like February. I was thinking it may not be my favorite month, as I like flowers in the gardens in the Spring, but it is a month I really enjoy.

In February you can feel the days are getting longer. When I was a surgical resident I learned how to cross country ski in February and that is when I first appreciate the true beauty of the month.  I remember the fields were open and snow covered and the sky was huge, clear and blue. Cold yes, but if you bundle up enough, it doesn't matter. It was simply beautiful.

So this morning we again spent some time outside in the sunshine, even though it is below freezing. I like watching the boys run and play in the snow, the squirrels are getting frisky and we have many, many birds at the feeders. My pair of bluebirds are still here feeding at the suet feeders. Shorty never ceases to amaze - my Yapese dog loves the cold weather. He likes to keep and eye on all activity outdoors. But he missed the deer crossing at the fence the other night. Saw my friend Bucky Deerburgher crossing into my yard, so I stopped the car to let him cross the road and just watch him run through the woods. So graceful, so beauty, so much a rodent with antlers. Hope he doesn't eat too many of my plants and shrubs.

Yes, I heard the news this morning. Three winter storms coming up this week alone. You say - let's hear what you have to say about February at the end of the week. But when it snows in February I shovel only the width of pathways and driveway as necessary. After all, March is coming soon and the snow will melt! No need to over shovel!

Blue skies and sunshine and a little snow in the backyard woods.

Gunnarr and Fionnegan in their new sweaters.

Shorty. Found him a tribal sweater, thought it worked for a dog from village in Yap!

Happiness is a journey. May you all find happiness in your lives in all that you do.

Until next time................
