02.13.15 Nan Madol

Visited Nan Madol and waterfalls today.

Nan Madol is a ruined city adjacent to the eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei that was the capital of the Saudeleur dynasty until about 1628.  It is in the present day Madolenihmw district of Pohnpei state, in the Federated States of Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean. The city, constructed in a lagoon, consists of a series of small artificial islands linked by a network of canals.

This area was apparently settled in the first or second century, but very little excavation has been done. Went with the two speakers from the conference and two 4th year medical students from Sydney, Australia. Paulina, the QA nurse at Pohnpei Hospital, was our "tour guide". She was delightful.

The walk through the jungle was beautiful - pretty hibiscus flowers, and of course, a couple of dogs.

And a fantail bird. These little ones are hard to photograph. Don't sit still for very long.

Paulina.

Crossed the stream walking through the water. No foot bridge here.

Some of the ruins.

We got there is a red pick-up truck.

A cute puppy.

This man was sharpening knifes. Should have brought mine.

A few farm animals.

A nice walk through the jungle with the occasional wooden footwalk.
