12.25.2021 MERRY CHRISTMAS

...... from my family to yours. May you all enjoy the blessings of this holy season. May you enjoy good health and be safe.

Christmas Eve is truly my favorite night of the year. It is magical. I enjoy attending Christmas Mass and the anticipation of a peaceful Christmas Day.

The boys had a very exciting morning with lots of presents from their Auntie Diane. It must have taken hours for her to wrap all of those little gifts - which they had fun unwrapping. Once I get a chance to edit photographs will share a few pictures with you.

A gate is placed around the tree as it is real and it fragrant.

What we all should do after opening Christmas presents and having a few early morning treats - take a nap!

Merry Christmas.

Until next time...............

12.25.19 MERRY CHRISTMAS

May you and your family enjoy the blessings of this most beautiful season. Christmas is a special time of the year and I do enjoy the special moments of the season. Christmas Eve is my favorite night of the year - I find it is calm and the tree lights relaxing. Midnight Mass is also very special and most everyone seems at peace. That is to say I wish there was peace and a peaceful feeling for everyone.

From my family to yours, may you enjoy a beautiful and peaceful day.

Merry Christmas.

01.06/19 Winter so far, so good.

With the exception of one snow fall that left us with six inches to shovel, it has been a very mild winter. We have had a lot of rain, some very cold days but very little snow. This week we had what I consider the perfect snowfall - nice big beautiful snowflakes that fell for about an hour. Then it stopped. No snow to shovel, no roads to clear. No need to cancel office hours. The perfect snow shower!

I do enjoy snow - one per season and for Christmas. After that I am happy with no shoveling tasks, no trees to clear from the car or driveway. Snow in the mountains for the skiers is great and I am always happy to hear the mountains are blessed with a foot or two of fresh powdery snow. And if we could figure out how to keep it from sticking to the highways and sidewalks I guess I wouldn't mind it too much in the lowlands either! Oh, such thoughts!

With the warmer and less snowy weather I am working on a new pathway in the yard. Because of the dogs (in large part) there is no grass from the porch to the edge of the treeline. And when it rains it is all mud. So I have been making a stone stepping pathway. It has changed shapes and configurations as I add a path to the bird feeder and one to the edge of another garden. And it always seems I need just one more big stone to finish the walk. So I go to the local nursery to get a few more stepping stones, add another dimension to the path and then need a couple more! Yes, this is a process. The stones are heavy but I am managing all right. One at a time, carrying them from the car to the yard. At the store I tell them that I will eventually finish but not until it snows! Then I will be finished, at least until the Spring!

Maybe the stone path will remind Shorty of the stone pathways of Yap. We used to walk them every Saturday or Sunday after Church. They meander through the forest and that is where I took a favorite picture of Shorty. We were walking with two of my favorite children Allerick and his sister Eva (forgive me if the spelling is not correct) when Shorty would run with the little girl but turn around to see if I was still coming with them. He has always been a good dog and good companion. I miss Yap and hope to return sometime soon. I wonder if Shorty misses Yap. It is hard to tell. He seems to be happy wherever he is!

Yesterday I hope I bought and placed the last stone for the pathway. I can easily now step from one to the next stone in a comfortable stride and stay out of the mud. And what do the dogs do - yes, you guessed it, they avoid the stepping stones and run through the mud! So we still have muddy paws and that leads to baths. They are not allowed inside the main part of the house with dirty paws. Fionnegan is so sweet. He knows the drill. As soon as he comes inside the atrium he stands on the blue towel to have his paws wiped. Gunnarr and Shorty come back when called but are less likely to stop for a paw cleaning unless called.

Shorty is learning a new trick - catching kisses. Sometimes I blow him a kiss and he now lifts his head up as to catch it. It is cute and entertains us both. Who knows what he thinks he is supposed to be catching in the air. And Shorty has also developed a new trick on Gunnarr. At night Fionn sits on my lap and Gunnarr is plastered to my side as we read or watch television. Shorty then sits on the other end of the couch. But lately, if Gunnarr leaves his spot to bark at a dog on TV, Shorty will take his place next to me and cuddle up by my side. The look of disappointment on Gunnarr's face the first time this happened was precious. But he has managed by now jumping up on the other side of me, a good feat for a dog somewhat less than athletic. He has to jump over Fionn and the armrest and does it most of the time with just one try. Both Fionn and Gunnarr seem to be a little shy of jumping on me in front of Shorty, maybe instinct tells then he will growl at them. Or maybe they are afraid he will snap at them. He is a snapper sometimes so I am always watchful of his behavior. His origins have determined his disposition - survival. Gentle nature or not, he has a strong survival instinct.

There is an interesting display of dog behavior here and I try to observe and not influence their interactions. They have done so well together and their relationships continue to evolve in a very positive way. They now interact much more often in a gentle physical nature with nose bumps and gentle nudges. Of course, they still wrestle a lot! And they are always together. Brothers to the end.

Here are a couple of pictures of my boys at the end of a day of play and running and helping me with the yard work. Sound asleep. Good boys. Let sleeping dogs lie!

Hope you are enjoying the mild weather of the new year if you live in New England as we prepare for winter storms in the near future. May you also be enjoying a new and peaceful new year.

07.03.18 Summer gardens

Summer has hit us hard with temperatures in the 90's. But the gardens look beautiful. thanks to a lot of rain last week. Fionnegan, Gunnarr and Shorty are enjoying the new space to run and play and they are getting a lot of exercise - providing I am outside with them. So I do yard work while they chase birds and squirrels and froggies. The gardens are also a nice place to relax after work and try to read a book for a little while.

Here are a few pictures of the flowers in bloom.
A gentle, delicate, pale pink rose. Planted along the fence hoping that it will not only survive but climb along the fence as a backdrop. The buds just started to open. These are the first of what I hope will be many flowers.

Opening this morning.

These flowers transferred themselves from another garden, but are welcome wanderers!

The lilies are starting the summer blooms.

My one vegetable - tomatoes. Soon they will ripen.

The dogs have been relatively good and not trampled the plants. Fionn likes to sit under the lavender while Shorty and Gunnarr sit on the boulder.

A little more color for the gardens.

And my boys outside, enjoying the summer morning.

Shorty.

Fionnegan.

Gunnarr.

Dirty paws, dirty noses, must stay outside and dry-off and clean up!

04/01/2018 Happy Easter

May all of you enjoy the great blessings of this miraculous day. Easter is a day of rebirth and joy.

And we are enjoying the Easter flowers that herald the beginning of Spring. Gone are our winter decorations and most of the snow and we now have Spring flowers in the house and the tips of greenery are seen in the garden. The days are longer and warmer and we all have spring fever!

It promises to be a nice day today, at least no snow, although some places are experiencing yet more snow. And that is no April fools joke, either. Since today is Easter Sunday, I decide not to pull any April fools jokes.

Happy Easter to each and everyone of you.

Here are a few pictures of the boys peering over the landing. Every time Gunnarr stops to peer over the side, I am also watching so the he doesn't decide to see if he can jump down! They have been more rambunctious than usual. So I guess it is time for longer walks on the trails. Maybe they are looking for their Easter baskets!

06/06/17 Remember Wile E. Coyote......

..... and the Road Runner?

Well, as I was carrying branches cut from pruning shrubs over the weekend I heard some rustling in the woods. I looked up and saw the most frightened looking turkey you could ever imagine, even when it is Thanksgiving. This poor bird was running (no one ever said they were smart) for all it had and had such an impressionable look of anguish on its face. I looked behind it and saw the most beautiful coyote mildly chasing it. I suspect if the coyote wanted to catch it, it would have as the turkey does not really run fast. I should check o their speeds. Anyway, I just stopped and watched the two until the coyote saw me and then stopped chasing our backyard turkey. The coyote moved away then stopped and looked back at me, then sauntered down the hill. I think the turkey might have had a heart attack. She is in the backyard all of the time, and I suspect the coyote is as well.

This was a great lesson for me. I would love to have the dogs run loose with me as I garden and cut trees and all of that yard work. But that coyote was three times as big as Shorty and none of the dogs would stand a chance.  In some ways it is really sad. When Fionn and Gunnarr were puppies they would love to chase each other in the back, barking and running as fast as they could, jumping on each other and standing on the top of the mountain of rocks. Kings of the mountain I would call them.  I loved watching them have fun and hone their coordination and chasing skills. But the big difference was I watched them, not cut trees or other tasks. And I did have to protect them from this big great horned owl who was also protecting her brood. I even put in an electric fence so they could be near me but still have fun. But after seeing Wile W. Coyete's cousin, I am really glad I fenced in another section around the house to keep them safe. It is a tall fence so the coyotes and foxes cannot jump over it. Shorty in particular is not pleased with the fence and confinement, but he is getting used to it. And Fionn and Gunnarr have been zapped by the electric fence that they don't really want to venture out of the main yard. They all peer at me through the chain link and run back and forth around the outside of the house to keep an eye on me as I move around the gardens. Sometimes they dig holes to China and I have used those holes to drop in a plant or two! But they are safe as I work.

The wild animals are beautiful but must be respected as they are, well, wild animals. I always keep an eye open for animals when I go through the woods with debris, mostly because I don't like snakes and have found a few there over the years. The turkey seem to be a resident and is fun to watch, the foxes den is still in use, and now we have a coyote.  Run, turkey, run!

BTW, Shorty is doing great. He had a trip to the vet and had three shots and did reasonably well. Yes, two of us had to hold him, but the job was done. He walked around the pet store sniffing all of the new scents and other dogs. And after he watched me brush Fionn and Gunnarr he let me brush his coat. Of course, he also tried to bite the brush but I am reinforcing that biting is bad. Especially if he nips at me! Some day he will get that bath, am waiting for a warm day. And he has learned to sit for a treat. Good boy.

05/23/17 Three times a coincidence? Maybe not!

It is the habit of all three dogs now to bark at the door if someone comes to the house and I am home. I have been told that when I am not home, they just look up and wag their tails! My watch dogs are not guard dogs.

Three evenings in a row, shortly after I start the shower the Fionnegan and Gunnarr leave the bathroom and all three dogs start barking - loud. The first night I thought that the neighbor had stopped over to say hello as I just came in the house from working in the yard. The second night when it happened I thought - two nights in a row I miss the door. Hmm. But on the third night of barking as soon as I stepped into the shower, the barking started again, and  I thought something must be  up.

So I was quick about it - which was a real surprise to them. No, there was no one at the door. They were running around the atrium and dining room chasing each other and playfully barking at each other and wrestling. Fionn has a "come play with me bark" and he was enjoying the effects on both Gunnarr and Shorty. They were happily barking back at him. They must have been having quite some fun.

Well when I suddenly appeared and said - what are you boys doing, they all stopped and lined up in a row facing me, tails wagging and big smiles on their faces and looking very ornery. Caught them! That would have been the picture.

Yes, they play together. Shorty is a little rough, but he is being as gentle as I think he can. He is used to a good wrestle with the dogs in Yap, but he is now the biggest dog and not the smallest, so he cannot be as aggressive as he once was. He is learning to play nice with both. And I do love to see Fionn and Gunnarr give nose bumps to Shorty at bedtime. It is really so cute.

And Shorty seems to love his walks. He now lines up at the door when I say let's go for a walk, allows me to put on his harness and waits for the leash to be attached.  I get him ready first and he patiently waits for me to get Fionn and Gunnarr ready. A lot of progress for a dog used to running the streets freely. He likes to set the pace - fast - and he likes to lead, but Fionn is at his heels as he was the previous leader. But by the end of our walks, they are all exhausted and the pace is casual. A tired dog is a good dog!

It is hard to get a picture of them playing as they start when I am either working at my desk or in the shower. But I did manage to snap a couple of the blur of action! You get the idea.

All three join in the fun!

No better pillow than your brother. Fionn and Gunnarr are both resting after an intense few minutes of three way wrestling. Shorty is under the desk sleeping, not seen in photo.

05.15.17 Making good progress

Well, life has been hectic and fun since Shorty arrived. This past week Shorty has shown a lot if interest in playing with Fionnegan and Gunnarr, a very good sign that they can co-exist together in a friendly environment. While Fionn and Gunnarr growl and jump on each other, Shorty joined the fray with sticking his nose in between then, tail awagging. Then over the weekend they were chasing each other around the yard and jumping up on each other. Fionn, who has tried to ignore him, even gave Shorty his "come play with me" bark.

We go for long walks in the park and I must say they all do well together. Shorty still leads, but I see Fionn making the move to resume his leadership role. Gunnarr almost always stays close tome as he always does. Gunnarr is my protector.

One of the cutest things happened last night. Before we go to bed, I always give Shorty a tummy rub and head rub and tuck him in his bed. I also cover him up with a blanket to keep him warm. But last night Fionn and Gunnarr gave him the sweetest nose bump before they went upstairs to sleep and Shorty was so happy - he just wagged his tail and smiled. As soon as the weather breaks we will resume our walks in the park. They all enjoy them. Shorty is eating well, does not bother the fluff muffins when they eat, and at the end of the day they all are sleeping in my study as I work.

I really am glad I brought Shorty here. I have no idea what would have happened to him had he stayed in Yap. With the threats by the landlord and the news that Connie and Daniel are leaving, Shorty would have ended up a true street dog with probably a short life span. Here he is flourishing and safe and looks very, very happy. I get so many "puppy kisses" from him that I know this was the right move to make. Shorty is in his "forever" home with his brothers Fionnegan and Gunnarr.

A tired dog is a good dog. Here are pictures of them asleep as I work. They do move around a bit but go fast to sleep.

Am still working on the ideal leash to walk three independent minded dogs. I found one on Amazon.com but still need to modify it to keep me from getting tangled! Am looking forward to warmer - and drier - weather so the dogs can run outside.

They all look happy.

12.25.16 Enjoying the day

We do have a white Christmas and it is a beautiful day. Much for which to be grateful. Fionnegan and Gunnarr enjoy the kindness of their Auntie Paula and Aunti Diane. I usually don't buy gifts for dogs, but I did get them the toy dogs that back and hop. Fionn would not go near them and Gunnarr was very curious. It was fun.

Hope you all had a wonderful day.

Merry Christmas!
