09.01.15 Birding in Port Moresby, PNG

Had a half a day of birding at the Pacific Adventist University. The campus is quite large with ponds and fruit trees and is an ideal location for birding. Leonard was my local guide and he was excellent. We identified over 40 different birds, many which are endemic to PNG. Leonard is a free lance guide and takes individuals and groups from all over the world.

Here are a couple of pictures from the morning adventures.

This is a really cool bird. He is a Masked Lapwing and his mate was sitting on their nest. He flew close to keep us away from her and the nest.

Pacific black ducks.

Purple swamphen. Lots of them and they are active and interesting to watch.

Pacific black ducks.

Nankeen night heron.

Great egret. And pink waterlilies. There has been no rain reported here for almost six months. Water levels are very low and the grass is brown.

Bowerbird mating nest.

Fawn breasted bowerbird. Lots of them in the fruit trees.

Can you find the bird? This is a male Papuan frogmouth.

Can you find the female sitting on her nest?

Here is the female Papuan frogmouth.

Black backed butcherbird.

Flowering tree. Large bunches of orange flowers attract the birds.

Bowerbird.

Yellow faced Myna bird.

One of my favorites. The Willie wagtail calls early in the morning and is seen almost ever where.

Orange bellied fruit dove.

Darter.

Comb crested jacuna.

Whistling duck.

Australasian grebes. Cute little birds.

Sacred kingfisher.

Australasian white ibis.

Whistling kite. Male and female in this tree.

Female on her nest.

Women under tree. They have a farmers market here weekly.
