09.10.15.Back in Port Moresby

It has been an exciting week and a half. Traveled to the western part of PNG (was told internet was available but it wasn't). This was an incredible experience. We have all been told that PNG is a dangerous country, and I will not dispute that, but I have found the people to be especially friendly and kind. That doesn't mean there isn't a rougue element here, but I was fortunate to only experience the good sided nature of the people.

Had scheduled a birding trip in three different places, but was successful in just one lodge for the trip planeed. However, the alternatives offered to me made the experience rich and rewarding. Will share with you some of the pictures and experiences in this remarkable land.

While many citizens of PNG are Christian, the animistic element of the custom is common at least in the areas outside of Ports Moresby. The three spirits are water, trees, and land. The spirits must be appeased for a happy life and some of these old customs are pervasive in the most rural communities. Tribal or clan warfare is conducted for either love or money, in simplistic terms - women, land and pigs. They still pay a bride price in pigs and if the husband to be and his family cannot afford the price, the entire related community contributes. Records are kept for debt repayment of pigs.

Here is some local artwork.
