We were lucky and dodged another bullet. Typhoon Noul was a direct hit - the very center was at the airport. On the good news side, it was only a category 1 typhoon, on the other side of the coin, it only moved at 2 to 3 mph, so we had wind and ran for most of two days. I staffed the Public Health "command post", and was busy. We work at getting PH people and supplies to the shelters they will man and keep communications with all of them throughout the storm. Minor injuries and a few roof tops gone, no loss of life. The debriefing this morning lasted almost two hours - a lot to learn and improve for next time. But we are making progress in preparedness.
This is the last NOAA image we could download - 8 PM - then lost the internet. We had power until about 2 AM then a roof flew off a house and severed the power lines. Power was restored within 10 hours. Very impressive. Met one of the administers for the power company and told them I was very impressed with how quickly they work to restore power. I think he liked hearing that rather than a complaint. They were out at 3 AM working - still typhoon winds and rain!
8 PM on May 5, 2015. We are a direct hit.
And look at what is following up on Noul. It is a tropical depression that is predicted to be at least a tropical storm (winds to 65) when it comes to Yap. It will be named if it becomes a storm. Typhoon Noul is heading straight for the Philippines.
The men from the green boat were safe at a shelter. One was bitten by a centipede and eventually brought to the hospital. He is doing well. The Urology visiting team made Martina L. John and me lunch (we were the PH on site volunteers - the PH command post!). Jackie, who is the founder of Canvasback made us a delicious soap of lentils and corn and rice and onions that just hit the spot. And they brought bagels and parmesan cheese. Oh that was so good.
We had some damage in the hospital parking lot. Tin from roofs (we don't know exactly where) ended up along the front and side of the hospital and smashed a few cars, including two of the PH staff at the shelters and one that belonged to PH. A lot of noise as they banged against the building and cars. But we were all safe in the hospital, and Shorty never left my side.
Here is Hope and one of the asylum seekers. We offered lunch to the one (not in the picture) who came to the hospital because of the centipede bite. His story is incredible. He was given $20,000 by his family to arrange for his passage to America. $13,000 went to the agent and then he went to Indonesia, where he was told he would leave in four days to the USA. Two YEARS later, he was put on the green boat. They took all of his possessions - iPhone and money and locked He asked to be released (and just get out of this situation) and they refused. And now 34 men are stranded in Yap and bureaucracy. They all must have a similar story.
.
We had little damage. Here are a couple of cars hit parked in the main lot at the hospital.
Inspector Shorty on the scene around 6 AM.
