04.03.15 Pictures of Ulithi

These are places when I had worked and had planned on working agin next week. The pictures of of the atoll of Ulithi and include Fedrai, Mogmog and Falalop. I will help  the Red Cross load the ship with supplies tomorrow.

Fais and Ulithi were a direct hit. This is Fedrai, the building on the left is the new clinic - left reasonably intact.

Here are a few more aerial photographs.

Most of the traditional homes were either flattened or lost the roof and some walls. Almost all water storage tanks were damaged.

Destroyed homes in Mogmog. The intact house belongs to the family of one of our Public Health staff.

This is the church - roof gone.  Inside damaged.

High School in Falalop.

This is the Ulithi Lodge - the owner had kindly allowed our immunization team to stay here for free. And to enjoy a feast for free. The roof on the back building was just finished when we were there. John was putting the final touches on it and had big plans for  the lodge to help the island's economy.

The Church and Rectory in Falalop (Father Kelly's home Church) was severely damaged as was the rectory. And his boat was washed away. Most of the motor boats that are used to get from one island to the other are destroyed.

On the ground photographs. This is why they tell you to stay indoors. Heavy flying debris that is very dangerous and deadly. (Chuuk had 5 deaths from this typhoon.)

The road to recovery begins. One step at a time.

We were all feeling good on Yap - we dodged a bullet. Our debriefing highlighted the good and the challenges and how we can improve our disaster plan for the next one. But after seeing these pictures, our concerns seem insignificant. Is that a form of survivors guilt?
