04.12.15. Fais

Fais is a beautiful little island and I had teased them that I would like to build my house overlooking the sea. Good thing I didn't get started. While the structural damage is not quite as bad as the Ulithi atoll, they too have flattened homes and cooking stations. And just like the others, all of the breadfruit trees are down and taro patches are ruined. The spray of salt water from the sea contaminated the gardens and the taro leaves are all brown. There is a well there that was just hooked up - and the water is good - I drank from it. But the kids area drinking brackesh water as there are no pots or buckets to collect the water and it is a little hike from the village.

The school is in good shape as is the dispensary. However, the dispensary was out of guaze and antibiotics. And there are many rats and mosquitoes. On Yap, we have no rat traps that we can find for them, no coils, no repellant, no nets. Not good planning.

Men in motor boats comes to the fishing ship tp pick up passengers and supplies.

Even the younger men came out in the outriggers. Not much room to load bags of rice or water.

Tree hit roof but house is still standing.

Breadfruit tree. The shallow root system and the tallness of the tree make it very vulnerable during a typhoon. It is also a staple of food for the islands, and most if not all are gone. Perhaps they can sprout new trees from some of the roots.

Damaged house.

Makeshift cooking house.

Little girl in the door way.

 The senator's house.

This cute little puppy and kitten made it through the typhoon. The puppy is adorable. I lifted him up and he held onto my arm with all four paws. He wasn't letting go!

This pig is a survivor for now!

House is demolished.

There was once a house here. Only the floor remains.

No power tools. Using a machete to cut through the toppled trees,

Brown booby.

Box contains cooking pots, plates, forks and spoons.

Church had little outside damage. Decorated for Easter Mass.
