07.06.15 Back in Bangladesh ...........

................ and loving it! From the very first time I worked in Bangladesh many, many years ago, I have always loved the people and my experiences here. I am so glad that I have been able to return.

We figured out that my last trip here was in 2013. Somehow I thought it  was last year - how fast does time fly.

There are many obvious positive changes that I have seen over the last two years - one is a very fast internet connection in many places. Also, a lot of cell phones here. Bangladesh is making great strides toward improvement.

We are having long days of work. We have gone to  two factories so far, at the first one we examined 670 workers. Today we are at Envoy - and examined over 450. We have a cracker jack team of junior and senior doctors and medical students who are working quite hard despite fasting for Ramadan. I do feel bad forthem - they cannot even have water. And the workers are fasting too. I have a lot of respect for all of them.

Even though we are working hard, we are enjoying everything. After we finished yesterday we wenr to a safari park and saw a Royal Bengal tiger, zebras, and lions. What a treat!

Here are a few pictures of the safari park and beautiful macaws..

One of my favorite wild animals - the zebra.

This black bear is eating a pumpkin. These pictures are taken through the bus window - we were not allowed to open the windows for  obvious reasons.

The king.

The Royal Bengal tiger is beautiful. He is large and active. Someone did open their window and waved a blue hat (?) at the tiger and the tiger got up. Before you knew it one of  the tour guides jumped up and made the man shuthte window. I suspect the tiger would go after anything that might be waving at it. One had bitten a man's hand once through an opne window.

Cute, but not a pussy cat. Look at those teeth.

Dhaka. This is a tough life for the poor people. While I am enthusiastic about the important improvements, we should not forget that there is extreme poverty here as well. These men sleep in their rickshaw.

One of the sites I fondly remembered from long ago was the colorful buses. It is really good to see the brightly colored trucks and buses.

Market with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Man pulling a cart of jackfruit.

Height and weight station.

Hazma, an 11th grade student from Chicago, helps us here doing the glucose checks. He is a very niceyoung man.

A woman employee at the textile factory.

Our health care team and the factory workers. He is a happy customer!

Three wonderful professional women who are helping us with the examinations.

Selfies have come to Bangladesh. Here we have Antura with her cell phone extension. She probably has taken more pictures that me!

Dr. Antura counseling a textile worker.

A surprise birthday party for Atanu, a 5th year medical student helping us. He was getting ready to go to bed whenhis room mate brought him down to the diniing room. We are staying as guests of Envoy Textiles tonight and they have also provide us with kind hospitality. Here is Hamine, the director of HR, a gift to Atanu.

She is a paramedic and has been helping us all week. A very nice woman.

We are very fortunate to  have such good people to help us with the work.

Dr. Ruhul Abid, Founder of Health and Education for All. A very kind man and a very good friend. I also know his wife Tahamas (not pictured as she is at home in Lexington) and daughter Tanas. Tanas helped us in 2013. Ruhul is with Hazma whois from a suburb of Chicago.
