09,22.14 School children examinations

The department of public health goes to all of the schools and conducts a session that includes health education, physical examination, vitamin A, anti-parasitic medication, and referrals to a specialist on an as needed basis. It was fun. We went to Early Childhood Education in Rumuu where the little ones were  from age 6 to  three. They were so cute and sang a welcome song for us. Here are a few highlights from our day.

Everyone leaves the backpack and flipflops outside. Inside, floors are spotless.

Here is a little one that caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door.

Yes, they are twins!

Just so incredibly darling.

They children sang us a welcome song in English and Yapese. There ate numbers and months of the year and days of the week and colors in English and Yapese. I am trying to  learn!

Here is a trencher and the twins.

A helper - he kept things running smoothly and encourage the kids to take a deep breath for their pulmonary examination.

Public Health staff getting ready for the morning.

Co-ordinator for the scholl program.

A couple of the kids want to be a doctor, most just grinned when  talked to them. They are a healthy group of children.

More teachers.

No front teeth!

Parents wait outside while we check the kids.

This is Dr. Cullen, who is from Fiji. He is wearing his traditional attire. Love the "skirt"!

This is Dr. Eric, from Yap. All doctors are generalists - they do everything. There ae no specialists on the island. Ususally there are visitng teams that come here, but the day to day work of taking care of ALL patients rests on the shoulders of a few.

And a special thank you to Mrs. PG for the lovely card and thougths.

Tomorrow, more scholl children but mist post about our island tour soon!
