05.19.15. Piig and Fachaulap
Today we visited two lovely islands – Piig and Fachaulap.
Piig has about 100 inhabitants and Fachaulap about 200. There are no pigs or
dogs here. People are lovely and friendly and I had a wonderful lunch of fresh
fish (not smoked) that was so very tender, sweet taro and land taro. A woman
named Juanita was extremely helpful in both the clinic and socially. The health
assistant is Sabino, who has no woman to examine the women, so it essentially
does not get done (gyne and breast). Had given my presentation again, some
places we sit on the floor, other places if they have chairs or benches we use
them. If there is an exam table we go inside, if not, we do the examinations
outside. I have knelt on hard concrete floors doing examinations!
Fachaulap has a midwife Marta and the HA Thomas. He saved
several patients for me to see, including his daughter with a dreadful rash.
She may be allergic to octopus. Marta did the breast exams for the Women’s
Health Week and had one patient she wanted me to check, plus all of the women
who wanted an examine.
These two dispensaries are the only ones so far (Fais might
have but we haven’t been there yet) who did what they could for women’s health
week. Give them a lot of credit for that. They are only about ten miles apart –
or even less. People with canoes or motor boats can go back and forth without
any problem.
Here are a few pictures:
